Understanding Reciprocity for Medical Marijuana Patients

In the context of medical cannabis, reciprocity refers to whether one state recognizes a medical marijuana card or patient authorization issued by another jurisdiction. When reciprocity exists, it may allow visiting patients to possess medical cannabis or, in some cases, purchase products while temporarily in that state.

North Carolina does not operate a statewide medical marijuana program, and state law does not recognize out-of-state medical marijuana cards. However, qualifying patients may legally obtain medical cannabis through the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) program on tribal lands.

Outside of EBCI tribal lands, North Carolina does not permit the purchase or possession of marijuana.
